Michael Ellsworth

Co-Founder & Chief Creative Officer

Michael Ellsworth has honed his skills as a creative director, producer, curator, teacher and public programmer, over the last two decades. Ellsworth has led workshops on ideation at SXSW, taught courses at Western Washington University and the Frye Art Museum on the responsibility of designers, and has spoken to audiences at the AIGA, CreativeMornings, and Practivism (GDC) on how to use design as a means of social change. His commitment to public spaces and public access has led him to serve on the Board of Directors of HistoryLink and the Seattle Public Library Foundation.

Gabriel Stromberg

Creative Director

Gabriel Stromberg has created classic and elevating design solutions for clients across the globe, including World Economic Forum, Project No. 8, and The Hotel Sorrento, among others. Before joining Civilization he worked as a lead creative for Totokaelo, The Henry Museum, and No Space Gallery, of which he was a founder. As the co-creator and host of Beyond This Point — a podcast centered on creativity and the process of design — Stromberg has moderated conversations with legendary designers Paula Scher, Lance Wyman, Experimental Jetset and other ground-breaking creators.


Civilization is a design practice that builds identity systems, digital experiences, printed materials, environmental graphics and exhibitions that are engaging, empathetic, sustainable and create meaningful connections. They work on a variety of projects for public, private and non–profit clients that share their commitment to creating positive change and promoting greater insights about our world. Civilization is a recipient of the National Design Award for Communication Design from the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum in honor of “excellence, innovation, and enhancement on the quality of daily life.” Their internationally recognized work is included in the permanent collection of SFMOMA and the Milton Glaser Design Archives at SVA, has won numerous awards including a Webby Award for Best Activist Website, and is regularly featured in print publications as well as most major global media outlets such as The Guardian, The New York Times, The Huffington Post and NPR. Their founding members lead workshops and lecture globally.
